The Northern California Nanotechnology Center (NCNC) is a world-class research, development and teaching facility for micro- and nanotechnology located at the UC Davis College of Engineering.

Founded in 2004, the laboratory – a 10,000 square-foot, class 100 cleanroom facility – is dedicated to fostering and promoting research, development and teaching in the field of micro- and nanotechnology, as well as providing an effective environment for non-traditional applications of classical microfabrication.

NCNC supports the robust interdisciplinary research environment at UC Davis in disciplines ranging from engineering to life sciences. The laboratory continually develops fabrication methodologies for electronic, optical, mechanical, chemical, biological, environmental, and bio-medical applications.

NCNC is available on a recharge basis to UC Davis students, faculty and staff, as well as industrial users.

What Are the Benefits of Using NCNC

  1. A complete suite of standard microfabrication tools is available on demand, which means no capital investment is required to start projects.
  2. NCNC is not MOS-clean, so a wide variety of materials are accepted.
  3. Lab members work on their innovations, not laboratory facilities, which saves time and effort.
  4. Lab members can attend free training classes taught by NCNC staff on a monthly basis.
  5. Lab members can schedule consultation time with NCNC staff about a process, or to answer basic material selection questions.
  6. Expert technical guidance is available from lab staff.
  7. Record keeping is handled by NCNC for safety and administrative reasons.
  8. Routine chemicals and supplies are furnished for one low hourly fee.

Who May Want to Use This Facility

  • UC Davis students, faculty and staff.
  • Companies which cannot afford to set up a "development lab" or an "applications lab" due to their small throughput can make use of the facility by special arrangement.
  • Large companies which cannot interrupt the flow of their manufacturing lines can arrange for research production runs at the facility.
  • National laboratories, with processes "temporarily down," can find an alternative work site at NCNC.
  • Researchers at other universities which lack an appropriate cleanroom or capacity to handle their work can apply for access here.

Imagine the possibilities of research collaboration with world-class faculty in a cost-effective environment.
